The Heinrich Böll Foundation grants scholarships to graduates and doctoral international students from outside Germany, african students inclusive who wish to pursue a degree programme in any university in Germany.

Foundation Overview

The Heinrich Böll Foundation grants scholarships to approximately 1500 undergraduates, graduates, and doctoral students of all subjects and nationalities per year, who are pursuing their degree at universities, universities of applied sciences or universities of the arts. The Foundation is named after the German author and Nobel Prize winner Heinrich Böll (1917-1985), who is one of the most important and best-known writers of the Federal Republic of Germany. 

It describes itself as an agency for green visions and projects, a think tank for policy reforms, and an international network. One of its mission statements is promoting those studying and graduating who have a positive attitude towards the goals of the Green project, share the fundamental ideals of the Heinrich Böll Foundation – democracy, ecology, solidarity and non-violence – and who take an active socio-political role.

Level/Field of Study: Masters and PhD degree programme in any course offered by any state-recognised university in Germany.

Benefits of the Scholarship

The Heinrich Boll Foundation Scholarships’ value varies for students depending on region and level Degree.

For Non-EU Masters students, the scholarship worth €850 per month plus various individual allowances with tuition fees. While for EU Masters students, it worth €649 plus €300 book money per month with tuition fees not inclusive.

For Non-EU PhD students, the scholarship worth €1,200 per month plus €100 mobility allowance per month plus various individual allowances with tuition fees not inclusive. While for EU PhD students, it worth €1,350 per month plus €100 per month research costs allowance with tuition fees not inclusive.

Eligibility Criteria

For Masters Students

  • Applicant may apply before commencing Masters programme or at any time up to the end of the first semester of the Masters programme.
  • Must provide a proof of first professional qualification.

For PhD Students

  • The applicant must have been accepted as a doctoral student by a state or state-recognised university in Germany.
  • By the application date, preliminary work must have been completed and a valid timetable for completion must be submitted.
  • PhD subjects related to focal points of the Foundation’s activities will be given priority

Generally, the foundation expects its scholarship recipients –

  • to have excellent academic records,
  • to be socially and politically engaged, and
  • to have an active interest in the basic values of the foundation: ecology and sustainability, democracy and human rights, self determination and justice.

  • Provide the requested information in the Online Application Portal
  • After uploading all of your documents, submit your application before the end of the application deadline.
